Some conditions which have responded well to Vitex are excessive bleeding, irregular cycles, fibroids and other uterine or ovarian growths and inflammations, excessive cramps, and amenorrhea. Vitex can also be very beneficial to women who have stopped using birth control pills, to re-balance healthy hormonal function. Because vitex contains progesterone, it is most helpful for problems which occur during the second half of the cycle, from ovulation to menstruation. This is the phase during which the symptom package known as PMS occurs, and vitex can help with all PMS-related problems- emotional upset, cramps, migraines, acne, swollen feet, etc. Although it works primarily on these second-half problems, vitex should be taken throughout the entire cycle, supplemented by estrogenic herbs during the first half of the cycle. For most purposes, it is necessary to take vitex daily as a long-term therapy. Improvement is usually seen after the third cycle from beginning, but it is necessary to continue for many months to effect long-term re-balancing. Vitex should not be taken if the patient is taking prescription-type hormones, as it may interfere with their action. It has also shown some effectiveness in treating symptoms of menopause. The berry is used for low sexual vitality with corresponding mental depression and loss of nervous energy and produces its chief effect on sexual organs of both sexes. Its medicinal virtues were probably introduced in Europe by the Arabs in the 10th Century. Known principally as a weed, dandelion has an astonishing range of health benefits. The leaves, which can be eaten in salads, are a powerful diuretic. The roots act as a "blood purifier" that helps both kidneys and the liver to remove impurities from the blood. This effect seems to be due to its potassium content. It also acts like a mild laxative and improves appetite and digestion. The Latin name means “the official remedy for disorders”, and shows how honored Dandelion has been for many different ailments. It is high in potassium and vitamin A, as well as the various salts which, in the body, are manufactured and used to purify the blood in the liver. Dandelion’s main use is for the liver, to protect and strengthen it, and dandelion has even been known to reverse the early stages of cirrhosis. Many herbalists consistently add dandelion to therapies for jaundice, hepatitis, and other liver disorders. Its high potassium level means that it acts as a balanced diuretic, not causing potassium depletion like many chemical treatments. Dandelion is very supportive and nutritious, and it’s content of sugars an starches are easily assimilated, even by those who normally have absorption difficulties, such as the elderly, diabetics, and people recovering from long illness. Echinacea Leaf

Echinacea purpurea. Ruled by Jupiter. Echinacea or purple cone-flower is used as a blood tonic and as a cleansing and anti-septic wash. Echinacea root was used by Native American shamans to strengthen their connection to the spirit world. They believed it increased the likelihood that their spells would work and also used it treat burns and snakebite. Ancient Chinese healers used it as an antibiotic. Today, it is widely used as an immune booster to fight infections and protect from colds and flu. In many clinical and laboratory studies, as well as centuries of anecdotal evidence, Echinacea has proven to be one of our most valuable herbs for all types of infection. The root has been shown to increase the secretion of immune-supporting chemicals in the body, while the flowers, leaves, and stem have been shown to increase white cell activity. Like Arnica, Echinacea can also act as an anti-inflammatory, and Echinacea is strongly topically numbing. All of these actions are systemic, with few specific anatomical affinities, and this combination of effects has led to its widespread use and effectiveness in fighting infections from simple colds, flu, and throat disorders all the way to more serious infections such as venereal disease, blood poisoning, and possibly AIDS, although anyone with a compromised immune system should consult a physician before using any immune stimulant. Some people have allergic reactions to Echinacea, especially to extracts taken directly in the mouth. Symptoms of that reaction are rash or burning in the mouth, and closing of the throat. This reaction is rare, and seems to be connected to daisy-family allergies, one of the common causes of hay fever. Often, no symptoms occur if Echinacea extract is taken in another liquid. Uses: corrector of the depravation of the body fluids, antiseptic, antifermentative, anti-zymotic, boils, carbuncles, abscesses or cellular glandular inflammations, blood poisonings, acute auto-infections, septic conditions, bites of poisonous animals, Iymphangitis, gangrene, or vaccinosis, erysipelas and foul ulcers, gangrene, venom infection, wounds, puerperal septicemia, aching in limbs, stuffiness of nostrils with mucus in sinuses and pharynx, chilliness with nausea, Malarial fever, and sore throat. It gets its name from its old use to increase milk production in nursing mothers, but is more commonly known for its beneficial effects on the liver. Milk Thistle is used as a long-term treatment for addiction recovery after the patient has stopped using drugs or alcohol, and in acute, emergency care for poisonings, whether chemical or drug. It is also valued for cases of mushroom poisoning, and an I.V. drip of Milk Thistle extract is one of the standard emergency room treatments in Europe for such cases. Studies have also shown that Milk Thistle is particularly good at neutralizing industrial poisons, especially those used in dry cleaning. It is claimed to have the ability to greatly reduce the damage to the liver if taken within 72 hours of a large toxic exposure, as well as being a beneficial ongoing therapy if toxic exposure occurs frequently, as with mushroom hunters, or dry cleaning workers. Milk Thistle accomplishes these effects by scavenging the free radicals that the liver creates as a by-product of trying to process toxins, as well as stimulating the production of proteins and new cells in the liver. These effects can also be used as part of a protective, regenerative, cleansing program during and after illness or chemotherapy. Milk Thistle is one of Europe’s most extensively studied herbs, and no acute or long-term toxicity has been found in association with its use. It is used in a whole range of liver and bladder conditions including hepatitis and cirrhosis. Recent research has confirmed traditional herbal knowledge, proving that the herb has a remarkable ability to protect the liver from damage resulting from alcoholic and other types of poisoning. The active ingredient appears to be silymarin. Uses: digestive, liver tonic, stimulates secretion of bile, increases breast-milk production, antidepressant. SaFFRON

Crocus sativus. Ruled by Sun. As costly as gold, Saffron has been highly valued since ancient times as one of the most sublime medicine/food substances in the world and is considered the most perfect of all spices. It comes from the stigma of the stunningly beautiful violet crocus flower. During a two-week period in autumn, three stigmas from each flower are handpicked and dried. It takes 225,000 stigmas from 75,000 flowers to produce just a pound of the herb. Eating saffron dispels depression and eliminates psychological inertia, and it was once thought that you could die of "excessive joy" by eating too much of it. Drinking the tea is said to bestow the gift of clairvoyance and greatly enhance the body’s healing powers. Yellow safflower is often used as a cheaper substitute for saffron, but true saffron has a deep red color and imparts a golden yellow hue to the food to which it is added. The alchemists considered saffron the gold of the plant kingdom and believed it carried the "signature" of the great transmuting agent for which the alchemists spent their lives searching. According to legend, Hermes created saffron when he accidentally wounded his friend Crocus, whose blood dripped to earth and sprouted as the flower that bears his name. Saffron was sacred to the Egyptian supreme god, Amen, and the Egyptians grew it in their sacred gardens at Luxor. Persian priests were said to have controlled the winds with saffron, and Persian women attached balls of saffron to their bellies to facilitate safe pregnancies. Saffron was also sacred to Eos, the Greek god of the morning light, and the spice has been described as the dawn’s light solidified. In the Middle Ages, it was sprinkled over the beds of newlywed nobility to ensure a fruitful marriage, and the incense was used for psychic work. Alchemist Roger Bacon believed that saffron delayed the aging process, and some modern psychics believe its odor and taste connect one to the eternal essences of childhood. In Ayurveda, Saffron is considered pure Sattva, the element of spirit and etheric energy, and it is held in high esteem as an aid to meditation, devotion, and spiritual development. It is also considered the best purifying herb, clearing the subtle channels of the etheric body, as well as eliminating toxic buildup in the physical body. It is used as a rejuvenative of the blood, metabolism, and entire body, and also acts as a catalyst to any other course of therapy with which it is combined. It is said to promote the assimilation of food into deep tissues, and also to stimulate new tissue growth, especially in the female reproductive system. Modern research has shown that saffron helps the body to regulate lactic and uric acids, and keeps these acids from building up because of muscle strain or injury, or some types of arthritis and gout. Additionally, it is considered one of the best anti-inflammatories, thus helping with symptomatic relief in these cases as well. It is also a natural source of hydrochloric acid, and so is tonic to the digestion. Bulk whole Saffron pollen in 1/4-ounce airtight container. Item #948. $28.95

It is also taken as a gently stimulating tonic. Properties: astringent, antiseptic, aromatic, carminative, estrogenic, reduces sweating, tonic. Sage in general is a powerful protectorant and healing agent and was sacred to the supreme gods, Zeus and Jupiter. In the Christian era, its healing energy is said to originate from the Virgin Mary. According to Medieval folklore, all you have to do to become immortal is take a little sage each day, especially in the month of May. Toads love sage and are said to be attracted to the plant’s primal power. The most powerful sage is picked on the summer solstice at the first ray of dawn, though an old superstition says that you should never pick your own sage but always buy it from a stranger. Sage opens one’s artistic faculties by stimulating the Throat Chakra. Sage is most often used for decreasing secretions, such as excessive sweating, saliva, and mother’s milk during weaning. It has some hormonal-balancing qualities, used mostly during menopause, and its drying action can help with the night sweats that occur during hot flashes. Sage is also considered highly antiseptic and antibiotic, and is recommended at the first sign of respiratory, throat, or sinus infections, its expectorant. Medicinal uses: kills bacteria, prevents spoilage, aids digestion, reduces high blood sugar, remedy for angina, edema, and night sweats. St. John's Wort Leaf

Hypericum perforatum. Ruled by Sun. St. John’s Wort is native to Europe but is widely cultivated elsewhere. St. John's Wort blooms during the summer solstice, and in medieval Europe it was considered to have powerful magical properties that enabled it to repel evil. People hung it inside their houses to protect themselves from vengeful acts of god or attacks by demons. It is named after St. John because bright red spots appear on the leaves around August 29, the day St. John was beheaded. The most well-known action of St. John's Wort is in repairing nerve damage and reducing pain and inflammation. It is taken to relieve the pain of menstrual cramps, sciatica and arthritis. The herb is used for all types of psychological disorders to elevate mood, relieve tension, and generally improve emotional well-being. The relaxing effects of St. John’s Wort seem to have a strong intelligence, traveling to the stressed tissues in the body, soothing the membranes and increasing the blood flow and tone of the area, while at the same time slightly stimulating the heart. In addition to being helpful in both depression and hypertension, these actions are often effective for treating uterine disorders and nerve-related problems, such as fybromyalgia or chronic fatigue. St. John’s Wort is also used to soothe and heal damaged skin, and as a systemic antibiotic and antibacterial, and some experiments have shown it to have inhibitory effects on the binding of HIV cells to human cells, as well as rendering AIDS non-infective in vitro, and inhibiting the spread of AIDS through cells in patients. Caution: Patients already taking medication for depression or psychiatric disorders should consult a qualified physician before taking St. John’s Wort, as potentially fatal reactions can occur. Additionally, St. John’s Wort can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight and increased risk of sunburn, especially in fair-skinned people. The other side of this is that the active constituent, hypericin, accumulates just under the skin and may need some sun exposure to be medically beneficial. Patients taking St. John’s Wort who spend too much time in the sun risk skin damage at a faster rate than they may have experienced in the past, but if sun exposure is avoided entirely, the helpful effects may be diminished or lost. Physician and patient should work together to find a happy medium. St. John’s Wort was believed to possess magical properties in the Middle Ages. The herb contains hypericin, a proven antidepressant, and relieves anxiety, tension, and insomnia. The herb is cleaned, cut, sifted, and dried. 1 lb. size! Item #924. $15.95
