AYURVEDIC
ALCHEMY
Ayurveda
is an ancient form of alchemical therapy that began over 5,000 years ago in
India. Ayurvedic principles are the same as those of Western alchemy but are
sometimes expressed in different terminology. According to ayurveda, the Four
Elements correspond to Earth, Air, Water, Fire (just as in Western alchemy),
although the Fifth Element, which is known as the "Ether" in Western alchemy, is
called "Space" in ayurveda. The elements are expressed in people as "humors" or
"temperaments" in Western alchemy, while in ayurveda, they are known as "doshas"
or constitutional types.
These three dosha types exist in everyone
and are named “Pitta,” “Kapha,” and "Vata." However
the balance between these three is not the same in every person, nor does it
stay constant for the same person. In ayurvedic alchemy, the combination of the
three doshas in your being is your hidden physical blueprint or "prakriti,"
which determines your personality and your tendency to various illnesses.
- The dosha Pitta is derived from the
element of Fire and is associated with transformation and
metabolism. It represents Sulfur in Western alchemy. Transformative
in its composition, Pitta is involved in metabolism, such as digestion of
food and hormonal activity.
- The dosha Kapha is derived from the
elements of Water and Earth and is associated with cohesion and the
formation of bodily structures. It represents Salt in Western
alchemy. Cohesive in its composition, Kapha lends to your body’s skin,
bones, stability
and the possibility of physical perfection.
- The dosha Vata is derived from the
two elements of Air and Ether (Space) and is associated with movement, communication,
and delivery. It represents Mercury in Western alchemy. Dynamic in
its composition, Vata controls the brain, transmission of nerve impulses,
and communication between the organs and bodily processes. Vata types often
exhibit the following physical characteristics:
Actually, the word "dosha" has the connotation
of a “fault” or "handicap." While Vata, Pitta and Kapha are positive forces in
the body, they are also potential faults if they get out of balance. Just as in
Western alchemy, the cure for "dis-ease" is to balance the elements and
integrate them into one holistic system. Too much of one dosha causes an
energetic imbalance in the body or mind that creates an environment for disease
to flourish. Ayurvedic herbs are used to reduce or pacify a dosha that has come
to dominate our bodies or personalities. Determine Your
Ayurvedic Type.
