The spagyric tinctures we offer are made in strict accordance with ancient alchemical principles by practicing alchemist Paul Bartscher, who has made his remedies available to the public since 1991. These Salt level extracts contain the spagyric essence, which is made by purifying the plant body until it becomes a clear or white crystalline salt, and then adding the salt to the alcohol tincture to capture the physical signatures of the plant. This part of the extract serves to give the essence “body” in alchemical terms and helps to carry its healing actions into the physical. Use Search to find a specific herb, symptom, or application.

AMERICAN GINSENG - Panax quinquefolium.

Ruled by Sun. Offering many of the same beneficial qualities as its Oriental relatives, suitable as an overall tonic and promoter of vitality, used in all types of conditions, such as weakness, heart problems, immune deficiency, hormone imbalances, and as an adaptogen. American Ginseng's effects on the brain differ somewhat from Oriental in that American is more calming and even sedative to brain and nervous function. ASHWAGANDHA

Withania somnifera. Ruled by Sun. An Ayurvedic herb used for regeneration, rejuvenation, and as a general tonic. It is used for all types of weakness or debility, whether from an illness, malnutrition, old age, overwork, insomnia, or any other case in which the body and its tissues are weak. It is considered calming and clarifying to the mind, and use to promote deep sleep without overly sedating effects. Recently, Ashwagandha was shown to slow the circulation of adrenaline in the bloodstream, making it useful for all types of anxiety, panic, and hypertension. Ashwagandha also has an affinity for the reproductive systems of both men and women, and is used in all cases of disease or malfunction of the sexual organs, as well as to improve and tone those systems in already healthy people. ASTRAGALUS - Astragalus membranaceus.

Ruled by Mars. A popular herbal tonic in Chinese medicine, used to increase and improve the “wei chi” or protective energy that defends the body from attack by illness, chemicals, and environmental factors. Astragalus is classified as an adaptogen and deep immune tonic, working from the bone marrow outwards to support immune function and regulate the body’s response to everyday stresses. It has been used for all types of infections, immune deficiencies, allergies, and to normalize blood pressure and heart function. Its protective effects to the tissues and its boosting of immune-supporting substances have been demonstrated even in patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, on average doubling the life span of the patients who used it in one study. Although Astragalus’ components do not themselves attack cancer cells, the American Cancer Society credited a fluid extract of Astragalus with restoring normal immune response in 90% of the patients studied. Because of this pattern of immune support, Astragalus is also being studied for use against AIDS, and is showing promise in that research as well. BLESSED THISTLE - Carduus benedictus.

Ruled by Moon. Traditionally, Blessed Thistle has been used as a tonic and balancer to the female system, organs, and hormones. It has been used with particular success in treating the symptoms and underlying hormonal upset associated with menopause. It is also a common addition to treatment of circulation disorders, especially those in which the brain, lungs, or heart are not receiving adequate amounts of blood. BURDOCK ROOT - Arctium lappa.

Ruled by Mars. Burdock root has long been a popular vegetable in Japan, where it is used as a nutritive tonic, blood builder, and general tonic which is cleansing to the entire system. It has been especially helpful in chronic conditions where toxicity or infection are present, such as arthritis, gout, recurring infection, skin diseases, and acne. Burdock is tonic to the digestion and to the actions of the liver, lymph glands, kidneys, and waste removal, and is often beneficial for sluggish conditions of these areas. For this reason, it is also highly valued as a spring cleansing tonic. CATUABA - Erythroxylum catuaba.

Ruled by Venus. An herb from Brazil, where it is highly valued as an aphrodisiac and general tonic. It is also considered a stimulant to the central nervous system, which is part of its sexual tonic effects, and also accounts for its use for various disorders such as hyperactivity, insomnia, nerve pain, exhaustion, and fatigue. It is considered aphrodisiac for both men and women, but shows the most benefit in cases of male impotence. CHAMOMILE - Matricaria chamomilla.

Ruled by Sun. Chamomile has a long and well-deserved reputation as a gentle but helpful herb in conditions of tension, irritability, or inflammation. It is warming and stimulating to elimination, especially sweating, but has a gently sedative action to the muscles, nerves, and stomach. CORDYCEPS - Cordyceps sinensis.

Ruled by Mercury. A Chinese herb which consists of an insect and a fungus in a natural symbiosis, Cordyceps has been valued for centuries in Oriental medicine as the premier tonic for the lungs. It has been used for all types of lung ailments, from short-term colds to chronic emphysema, and is also revered by athletes for improving oxygen intake and athletic performance- in 1993, the Chinese Olympic track team had used Cordyceps as part of their training regime, and performed at a level which amazed the world, breaking nine world records. Cordyceps has also been found to be calming to the overall system, and to the circulatory system in general, lowering blood pressure and more efficiently circulating oxygen through the body. DAMIANA - Turnera diffusa.

Ruled by Venus. A liqueur of Damiana, which comes in a goddess-shaped bottle, is a traditional wedding gift in Mexico. Famous for its aphrodisiac and tonic properties, Damiana also helps the general health of the sexual organs, and is antiseptic to the urinary tract. Damiana is stimulating and rejuvenating to the reproductive organs, as well as to the nervous system, especially increasing tactile sensation. It is also used as a general women's tonic and is believed to increase fertility in both men and women. It can be over-stimulating to the nervous system, and is best taken in small, frequent doses, for finite periods of time. ECHINACEA - Echinacea angustifolia.

Ruled by Mars. In many clinical and laboratory studies, as well as centuries of anecdotal evidence, Echinacea has proven to be one of our most valuable herbs for all types of infection. The root has been shown to increase the secretion of immune-supporting chemicals in the body, while the flowers, leaves, and stem have been shown to increase white cell activity. Like Arnica, Echinacea can also act as an anti-inflammatory, and Echinacea is strongly topically numbing. All of these actions are systemic, with few specific anatomical affinities, and this combination of effects has led to its widespread use and effectiveness in fighting infections from simple colds, flu, and throat disorders all the way to more serious infections such as venereal disease, blood poisoning, and possibly AIDS, although anyone with a compromised immune system should consult a physician before using any immune stimulant. Some people have allergic reactions to Echinacea, especially to extracts taken directly in the mouth. Symptoms of that reaction are rash or burning in the mouth, and closing of the throat. This reaction is rare, and seems to be connected to daisy-family allergies, one of the common causes of hay fever. Often, no symptoms occur if Echinacea extract is taken in another liquid.
