FENUGREEK - Trigonella foenum-graecum.
Ruled by Sun. Fenugreek is popular as a spice and medicine in India. It is a tonic to digestion and the digestive organs, and so is used as a spice in heavy or difficult-to-digest dishes such as beans. It is also tonic to the respiratory, nervous, and reproductive systems, used for allergies, chronic cough, bronchitis, migraine, to promote milk and maintain healthy breast tissue, and for male infertility. Modern research has shown that it can reduce bad cholesterol without affecting the good cholesterol, and that it can lower blood sugar levels in patients with mild diabetes. Item #1049. 1 oz. $15.95
FO-TI - Polygonum multiflorum.
Ruled by Sun. Fo-Ti is also known as Ho Shou Wu, which refers to its use by an ancient Chinese king, named Ho, whose head of hair (shou) turned black (wu) again after using this herb. Fo-Ti, as it is also known, is used as a regenerative and restorative of both youthful appearance and vitality, and the efficient organ function that is often lost with age. It is rich in flavonoids and is included in all Chinese formulas for longevity. Fo-Ti is considered especially tonic to fertility in both men and women, as well as building to the bone marrow, thus rejuvenating the body from the deepest levels. Modern research has shown Fo-Ti to be beneficial to the endocrine glands and to the cardiovascular system. For the best results, water intake should be increased while taking Fo-Ti, which brings out its kidney tonic properties. Also available as a Spagyric Spiritualized Essence for Energetic Balance, for long-tem use as a tonic and energy booster. Item #1040. 1 oz. $15.95
GINGER - Zingiberis officinalis.
Ruled by Sun. A warming tonic, used to increase digestion, metabolism, and circulation by many cultures for centuries. In Ayurvedic medicine, Ginger is called the “universal medicine” and it is said that “every good quality is contained in Ginger.” It is used whenever warming and stimulating actions are needed, such as lung or sinus congestion, sluggish digestion and poor circulation. Recent research has shown that Ginger is as effective as the various more commonly used pharmaceuticals for nausea, motion sickness, migraines, stroke, hardening of the arteries, and high cholesterol, without the often serious side effects that the drugs have. Item #1041. 1 oz. $15.95
GINKGO - Ginkgo biloba.
Ruled by Mercury. Ginkgo trees are the oldest still-extant species of tree, and are extremely resistant to climactic changes, pollution, viruses, fungus, radiation, etc. Ginkgo brings those qualities to those who use it. Ginkgo is used extensively in the Orient as an herb of longevity, extending the functional periods of one’s life, besides just the span. Studies indicate that Ginkgo reduces blood cell clumping and relaxes blood cells so that blood can flow more freely, reduces tendencies towards blood clots, and increases oxygen flow to the heart muscle. Ginkgo should not be used by anyone using other blood-thinning agents. It also appears to increase blood flow to the brain, and increase the body’s levels of acetylcholine, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which are vital brain neurotransmitters. For these reasons, Ginkgo is often used with great success for memory loss from various causes, as well as general lack of optimum brain function. It has been shown to greatly increase mental alertness, memory, and attention span, and is potentially useful in all cognitive disorders. Some recent research has found Gingko to be effective in correcting the loss of sexual desire that occurs as a result of the use of some anti-depressants, and it was especially helpful in women with such problems. Also available as a Spagyric Spiritualized Essence for Energetic Balance, which is more stimulating to the brain and thought, as well as generally vitalizing. Item #0023. 1 oz. $15.95
GINSENG (ORIENTAL) - Panax ginseng.
Ruled by Sun. Ginseng has been revered for centuries in the Orient, and has achieved a near-mythic status as an herb which can cure nearly all ailments and greatly increase well-being at all levels. Western research has examined only a fraction of the uses and cures claimed by Eastern medicine, but all of the Western research has tended very strongly to support what has been known to Oriental medicine for ages. Ginseng’s broad spectrum of healing actions, as well as its immense effectiveness at healing, can be traced mainly to its adaptogenic qualities. As an adaptogen, it helps to regulate all systems of the body, regardless of the direction of action needed, and helps the body respond efficiently and protectively to all types of stresses- environmental, emotional, illness, nutritional, etc, and to re-establish health by bringing the body back to homeostasis. These balancing qualities can be applied to most of the body’s systems to beneficial effect. To the metabolism, Ginseng is helpful in building healthy tissues and cells, rather than fatty tissues, or mutated cells from oxidation, pollution, or other harmful substances. It is also beneficial to the immune system, and to the production of correctly-formed DNA. This group of effects have led physicians to use Ginseng to treat tumors, cancer, and radiation damage. Its normalizing effects on the circulatory system can result in regulated blood pressure, stronger and more regular heart activity, increased circulation and lower cholesterol. It is also tonic to the brain and nervous system, stimulating or relaxing as needed, and is used by many on spiritual paths to promote clarity and deeper meditation. Some data indicates that Ginseng promotes testosterone production, and so is helpful for all types of male complaints. It is especially beneficial for prostate problems. There is some debate about Ginseng’s usefulness for women in the long term. Most herbalists agree that it is beneficial as a tonic for women in short term- for 6 weeks at a time, with 6 month breaks between, is a conservative statement. Other herbalists state that Ginseng also produces estrogen, and is equally safe for men and women. Ginseng’s effects are cumulative, and it has greatest effect if taken daily for years. It can be detrimental by being overly stimulating if taken by the elderly, weak, or persons recovering from a long or especially debilitating illness. In such cases, it is wise to first build up the patient through gentler tonics, and then switch to Ginseng for long-term health. Another possible approach for women and persons recovering from illness is the use of American Ginseng, which some people find less overwhelming and more balanced than Oriental. Our Four Ginsengs Formula contains Chinese and Korean Panax, Siberian, and American Ginsengs. It is available as a very balanced Spagyric Essence for Physical Support, and a more stimulating Spagyric Spiritualized Essence for Energetic Balance, suitable for long-term use. Also see Siberian and American Ginsengs, each available as a Spagyric Essence for Physical Support and a Spagyric Spiritualized Essence for Energetic Balance. Item #0047. 1 oz. $15.95
GOLDENSEAL - Hydrastis Canadensis.
Ruled by Jupiter. Used as a specific for problems of the mucus membranes, to reduce swelling, inflammation, and infection, and as a very strong blood purifier for serious, toxic blood conditions such as food poisoning, herpes, measles, etc. Goldenseal contains berberine in larger amounts than the Mahonia (Oregon Grape) family. In some studies, berberine showed specific activity against Candida albicans. It is also used when digestive problems are caused by a lack of activity or tone, or when those tissues are overly relaxed or diseased. Externally, Goldenseal is used for infections and parasitic skin problems. Some of the problems in using Goldenseal, however, should be mentioned here, as most of the public is unaware of these issues. Goldenseal is such a strong antibacterial that it kills almost all bacteria with which it comes into contact, including the beneficial bacteria of the digestive tract. It also appears to interfere with vitamin B absorption. More importantly, though, is that Goldenseal is in serious danger of extinction from over-harvesting, as a result of its over- and misuse for minor infections such as colds. Aside from boosting your immune system and relieving symptoms, which can be accomplished using more sustainable herbs (such as Oregon Grape and Plantain), there is not much that can be done about common, non life-threatening illnesses like colds and flu. Taking something as powerful and rare as Goldenseal for such ailments is like using chemotherapy for a pimple, and unnecessarily endangers an herb we do need to protect, both for the serious illnesses for which it is helpful, and for its own intrinsic value as a creation of Mother Nature. Item #0064. 1 oz. $15.95
GOTU KOLA - Centella asiatica.
Ruled by Mercury. Gotu Kola is known as “Brahmi” in India, because of its popularity with Brahmans, or Hindu holy men. It is an excellent rejuvenative tonic and longevity herb, with an affinity for the nerves and brain, and is used to restore the nervous system after mental illness or physical disease. Like Ginkgo, it has been said to increase mental capacity, recall, and brain activity, but at the same time act as a sedative. This combination of qualities make it popular for meditation. Gotu Kola is used in Ayurvedic medicine to improve circulation to the skin, helping the skin to throw off dead or damaged layers, restoring its ability to breathe. This is applied to eczema, psoriasis, and even leprosy. Large doses or prolonged use can cause headaches or dizziness. Gotu Kola, despite the sound of its name, is not related to Cola nuts, and does not contain caffeine. Also available as a Spagyric Spiritualized Essence for Energetic balance, clarifying to the thought and mental state, and as a Spagyric Magistery for Soul Level balance of the Mercury archetype. Item #0024. 1 oz. $15.95
GUGGUL - Commiphora mukul.
Ruled by Mars. Guggul is an Ayurvedic herb related to Myrrh, and used for many of the same infection-related problems, but is considered to have much less of the potential for toxicity than Myrrh. It is reputed to have strong purifying powers, and to disinfect secretions, clear and heal the skin and mucus membranes, clear the lungs, and to catalyze new tissue growth, especially of the nerves. Its cleansing powers are also used when there is a buildup of toxins, such as tumors, fats, or dead tissue, and it is considered especially helpful in arthritis. In clinical studies, Guggul has also been shown to reduce cholesterol. Item #1150. 1 oz. $15.95
GYNOSTEMMA - Gynostemma pentaphyllum.
Ruled by Sun. Its common name in its native China translates as "Magical Grass", and it is highly revered as a tonic to all systems and bodily functions. It has a unique position as both a tonic and specific cure, and so is helpful in a wide variety of complaints. Its broad usefulness comes from its excellent adaptogenic properties, through which it helps the body to respond to many stresses and adverse conditions. It has been used to combat fatigue and low energy, increase oxygen efficiency and metabolism, improve digestion and appetite, and balance nervous system function. Its effects on the nervous system are especially interesting, as it can be calming or stimulating as needed. It can also work in both directions regarding weight, increasing or decreasing according to the direction of imbalance. The list of conditions it has been used to treat also includes sexual dysfunction, immune disorders, emotional imbalances, inflammations, cancer, blood sugar imbalances, and much more, and its very bitter taste suggests liver tonic properties as well. Also available as a Spagyric Spiritualized Essence for Energetic balance, with stronger mental/emotional effects and a more stimulating nature. Item #1145. 1 oz. $15.95
HAWTHORNE - Crataegus oxycanthus.
Ruled by Sun. Recent research indicates that Hawthorne contains strong anti-oxidant chemicals which collect in the heart, increasing blood flow to the heart muscles, mildly dilating blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, reducing strain on the heart, and helping it to use oxygen more efficiently. Hawthorne is most commonly used for cardiac weakness, angina, heart murmurs, respiratory inefficiency, hardening of the arteries, hypertension, and other conditions related to the circulatory system. Hawthorne has also been studied for its stabilizing effects on cartilage, and may be helpful for some types of arthritis. Item #0041. 1 oz. $15.95
HOPS - Humulus lupulus.
Ruled by Moon. A well-known ingredient in beer, with an equally long history as a healing herb as well. According to many accounts, it was long ago noticed that some elderly women who worked as hops pickers experienced a return of their menstrual cycles and other youthful attributes. This led to one of Hops' most common uses, as a hormonal balancer and general restorative during and after menopause. Hops contains strongly estrogenic compounds, also useful for regulating and balancing the menstrual cycle. Hops' other popular use is as a calmative and anti-stress herb, whether sewn into a dream pillow or taken internally. It contains some of the same sedative and anti-spasmodic constituents as Valerian, and can be applied to many of the same imbalances. Unlike Valerian, Hops is also a bitter digestive and liver tonic, and this combines with its calming, relaxing properties to create a very effective remedy for any digestive upset caused or aggravated by stress, or when there is cramping. Also available as a Spagyric Spiritualized Essence for Energetic Balance, less of a sedative and more directed to long-term tonic use and for the mind and emotions. Item #1013. 1 oz. $15.95
HORNY GOAT WEED - Epimedium sagittatum.
Ruled by Mars. This herb gets its common name from centuries of observation by shepherds, who say that goats copulate with much more frequency after grazing on the plant. This action has been supported by studies of other animals, as well as centuries of use in China, where this herb is known as Yin-Yang Huo. Yin-Yang Huo is considered the most powerful aphrodisiac herb, but it acts in a balanced way, in creasing Yang (male virility and drive) without damaging Yin (female receptivity and peace). This herb is also an overall tonic and restorative, and brings warm feelings of euphoria and increases nerve sensitivity in the genital areas. Item #1157. 1 oz. $15.95
HORSE CHESTNUT - Aesculus hippocastanum.
Ruled by Venus. A restorative to the veins and capillaries, reducing their fragility and permeability and helping them to perform their job of moving blood more efficiently. These effects are most pronounced in the intestines, uterus, and prostate. This balancing action can also be applied to conditions such as varicose veins, edema of the legs, nighttime cramps, especially in the legs, headache and skin reactions due to liver stagnation, and menstrual imbalances. Like Butcher's Broom, it is also used as a post-operative tonic, but its action is less thinning to the blood, acting more to reduce soft tissue swelling and increase fluid transport. Item #0039. 1 oz. $15.95
HORSETAIL - Equisetum hyemale.
Ruled by Venus. Used most often for congestive or infectious conditions of the kidneys, as it is a very strong diuretic, as well as an anti-infective and astringent to the urinary system. These astringent properties can also be applied to conditions of unwanted bleeding, such as excessive menstruation, hemorrhoids, or ulcers. Horsetail contains large amounts of minerals, especially silica, and so is used in malnutrition-related disorders which manifest as poor hair, skin, or fingernail condition. It can be irritating to the urinary system, and should be taken in small, frequent doses for short-term therapy only. Item #0032. 1 oz. $15.95
KAVA KAVA - Piper methysticum.
Ruled by Moon. Traditionally used in Polynesia as a narcotic and euphoric, as well as a social sacrament for promoting friendly interpersonal interactions. Indeed, any important community function within the native groups of the area is marked by the ceremonial drinking of Kava preparations, especially in meetings where there is potential for negativity, such as treaties or reconciliation between enemy groups. Modern usage has shown Kava to be an effective antispasmodic, painkiller, and sedative, and it has also been found to be an excellent remedy for migraine headaches. It is also used for nervousness and insomnia, and for nerve, muscle, and skin problems where pain is involved. Historically, groups consuming Kava on a regular basis have few troubles with diseases of the sexual organs, and they claim that any outbreaks of sexual diseases are halted by the Kava before they damage the body. Also available as a Spagyric Spiritualized Essence for Energetic balance, with more outgoing and stimulating social and emotional qualities, and also useful for meditation. Item #0015. 1 oz. $15.95
KUDZU - Pueraria lobata.
Ruled by Moon. Used in Chinese medicine for exterior overheated conditions lodged in the muscles, with fever, headache, and stiff or tight upper back and neck, such as some migraines. Kudzu can also help in cases of measles which have not broken out yet, by helping them to open, drain, and leave. It is also used for its anti-spasmodic and relaxing effects, for intestinal cramping, and for hypertension. These effects increase blood flow to the brain, and act to lower the blood pressure overall. Kudzu is also valued for its benefits to recovering alcoholics. Item #0012. 1 oz. $15.95
LEMON BALM - Melissa officinalis.
Ruled by Moon. Considered by Paracelsus to be a cure-all, and was the herb he revered most. It is often useful for tension problems, whether manifesting as headaches, stomach aches, or general tension and irritability. It is also considered particularly good for children, especially in the cranky, feverish, hyperactive-but-exhausted onset of illness stage, and particularly in cases of ear infection. Melissa appears to work as a sedative in tension cases, but at the same time as a mood elevator and antidepressant, and so can be useful for relieving tension in people who might have overly depressive reactions to heavier, downer-type sedatives. It is also used as an anti-spasmodic, especially for menstrual cramps. Melissa is not potent, but reliable and predictable with no known side effects. Also available as a Spagyric Magistery for Soul Level Balance, with very elevating and cheering properties. Item #0016. 1 oz. $15.95
LICORICE - Glycyrrhyza uralensis.
Ruled by Mercury. Licorice is probably the most widely used herb in Oriental medicine. Its main actions are related to its sweet taste and high content of natural sugars, and its content of hormonal compounds. Licorice is useful alone, or as an addition to nearly any formula, both helping with flavor and through its ability to assist other herbs in their actions. It is also considered detoxifying to the potential side effects of other herbs. Licorice has been used with great success as a tonic for balancing low blood sugar levels, since the sugars in it seem to be encapsulated into “time-release” cells to be used when needed, rather than entering the system all at once like other sugars. Licorice is also used to stimulate the appetite and the building of flesh, and may be helpful in cases of anorexia and related disorders. Licorice has constituents similar in makeup to cortisone, and so may be useful for chronic, painful inflammations such as arthritis. Because of its spectrum of hormonal components, it is also taken for imbalances in ovulation and the menstrual cycle. Licorice has shown strong immune-building properties, as well as specific actions against herpes and the bacteria which may cause stomach ulcers. Caution: Licorice should be treated carefully by people with hypertension, heart problems, high blood pressure, or over-active adrenals. It affects the balance of salts in the bloods, a potentially useful action, but prolonged or high doses can cause sodium retention and potassium depletion, and may lead to hypertension, edema, nervousness, or elevated blood pressure. Often these problems can be lessened by using Licorice in smaller doses, in combination with other herbs, and/or by supplementing the diet with higher potassium intake than normal. Item #0029. 1 oz. $15.95
LOBELIA - Lobelia inflate.
Ruled by Mercury. The most common use for Lobelia is as an aid to quitting smoking (also see Oatstraw). It seems to mimic the effects of nicotine in the body, thus helping to reduce cigarette cravings, while at the same time opening the lungs to remove phlegm and toxic buildup, and promoting healthy blood flow to the lungs. Lobelia acts to relax and open any part of the body which is in spasm or pain, or congested or restricted, and allows blood and oxygen to flow freely throughout the body. Some conditions which Lobelia has been used for are asthma, coughing, headaches, convulsions, epilepsy, and cramps. It is also a potent painkiller, topically and internally, and can be helpful for toothaches and earaches. It is considered a stimulant in small doses and a sedative in large doses, and reliably causes vomiting in very large doses. Item #0020. 1 oz. $15.95
