MACA - Lepidium meyenii.

Ruled by Moon. An herb which grows high in the Andes of Peru, valued as a nutritive and specific tonic. It is very high in many vitamins and minerals, especially vitamins B, C, and E, and calcium, zinc, iron, iodine, and magnesium. It is also rich in sugars, carbohydrates, amino acids, and essential fatty acids. It is used to generally support the whole body, and specifically give more energy, mental clarity, and muscle tone. It is also considered an aphrodisiac, and has hormone-balancing effects used for menstrual disorders, menopause symptoms, and infertility. MILK THISTLE - Sylibum marianum.

Ruled by Jupiter. Gets its name from its old use to increase milk production in nursing mothers, but is more commonly known for its beneficial effects on the liver. Milk Thistle is used as a long-term treatment for addiction recovery after the patient has stopped using drugs or alcohol, and in acute, emergency care for poisonings, whether chemical or drug. It is also valued for cases of mushroom poisoning, and an I.V. drip of Milk Thistle extract is one of the standard emergency room treatments in Europe for such cases. Studies have also shown that Milk Thistle is particularly good at neutralizing industrial poisons, especially those used in dry cleaning. It is claimed to have the ability to greatly reduce the damage to the liver if taken within 72 hours of a large toxic exposure, as well as being a beneficial ongoing therapy if toxic exposure occurs frequently, as with mushroom hunters, or dry cleaning workers. Milk Thistle accomplishes these effects by scavenging the free radicals that the liver creates as a by-product of trying to process toxins, as well as stimulating the production of proteins and new cells in the liver. These effects can also be used as part of a protective, regenerative, cleansing program during and after illness or chemotherapy. MOTHERWORT - Leonuris cardiaca.

Ruled by Moon. A traditional remedy for mothers-to-be, used in the last few weeks of pregnancy to prepare for a smooth and easy labor. It was also historically used throughout pregnancy to soothe pains and tensions common at this time, although it is now regarded with more caution as a pregnancy herb. Motherwort has a combination of effects which could make it very helpful around pregnancy and childbirth, but it should only be used under qualified guidance at this time, as it can stimulate menstruation. Motherwort is more widely used for suppressed, crampy, or difficult menstruation, and often brings quick relief. It is also calming and tonic to the nerves, heart, and circulation, and so helps with the tension many women experience with PMS, as well as being helpful to both sexes for all types of tension, nervousness, insomnia, and over-stimulated heart conditions. A popular spring tonic, Nettle contains large amounts of nutrients, especially iron, calcium, silicon and potassium, and are opening and cleansing to the body, stimulating all types of elimination. Nettle is also reputed to be alkalinizing to the blood, and to both remove uric acid and prevent its crystallization in the kidneys and joints, possibly helping with arthritis. Nettle has also shown some activity against allergies, and studies indicate that Nettle root has synergistic activity with Pygeum for the treatment of prostate disorders. Item #0056. $15.95

OREGON GRAPE - Mahonia aquifolium.

Ruled by Mars. Oregon Grape is considered an excellent blood purifier, especially in chronic skin problems like acne or eczema. It is claimed to stimulate the liver and gall bladder, and absorption of nutrients, and to help with chronic constipation, which is often related to skin problems. It also stimulates acid production in the stomach, as all bitter herbs do. As part of its cleansing effect on the liver, Oregon Grape has been shown to release iron which is stored in the liver into the blood stream, which can be useful in anemia, and safer than risking the side effects of large doses of additional iron. It contains berberine, the main active constituent in Goldenseal, but in a more balanced form which does not cause the side effects of Goldenseal, and Oregon Grape is not endangered and recovers quickly from harvesting. In a study of Oregon Grape’s antiseptic and anti-bacterial effects, it was shown to block the adhesion of streptococcus, E. Coli, and salmonella to various mucus membranes. OSHA - Ligusticum porteri.

Ruled by Mars. Probably the most commonly used herb of the southwest United States, Osha will not mold, regardless of how it is stored or dried, apparently because of the strong anti-fungal effects in the large amounts of oil in the plant. Osha is used at the first sign of illness to help kill the disease and induce sweating to eliminate it. It is as strong a blood cleanser and antibiotic as Echinacea, but with a specific affinity for the mucus membranes and respiratory tract. When the active constituents in Osha build up in the body, the excess is secreted through the lungs via respiration, so any Osha taken goes to those areas. Additionally, Osha is a good topical painkiller, so it can be a blessing for coughs and sore throats, relieving both symptoms and cause. It is also considered a very reliable, nearly instant expectorant and decongestant, and often gives immediate relief from hay fever symptoms. Caution: Osha can be extremely heating, so if high fever is already present, it may be unsafe. Some herbalists recommend against Osha in pregnancy because its extremely stimulating effects could lead to miscarriage. PASSION FLOWER - Passiflora incarnate. Ruled by Moon. An outrageously beautiful plant, popular as a simple, gentle sedative and mild muscle relaxant. It does not have intense sedative or painkilling action, but has a combination of effects which increases respiration, but at the same time slows the heart rate, dilates the blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. This makes it potentially useful as a long-term therapy for the physical side of chronic tension, rather than just sedating the patient. It can also be helpful in conditions of muscle spasm, from injury, menstrual problems, or even stomach cramps. It has a very balanced action in cases of insomnia, and most people are calmed enough by it to sleep deeply, yet still wake refreshed and alert. Item #0013. $15.95

PLANTAIN- Plantago majus.

Plantain is a classic standby of herbal healing, valued for its healing efficacy, gentleness, and because it is common and easy to grow, found in neglected corners of most lawns and parks. It is a diuretic and reliable antibacterial/anti-infectant, and has a unique combination of astringent and moisturizing properties. Plantain is useful whenever infection or inflammation has progressed to a very irritated or painful stage, when more aggressively heating or drying herbs would cause discomfort, or in combination with such herbs to mitigate their action. Some conditions it is useful for are diarrhea from all types of causes, hemorrhoids, liver, kidney, or bladder infections. It can also be helpful to illnesses of the sinuses, throat, and respiratory tract, as it reduces phlegm and is tonic to the mucus membranes. PLEURISY ROOT - Asclepias tuberose.

Ruled by Mercury. Used by Native Americans since before the Europeans arrived to treat lung disorders, including pleurisy, pain when breathing, pneumonia, colds, flu, bronchitis, etc. It is considered a specific for chest congestion with thick mucus and a tight feeling. Pleurisy root is also used to promote sweating and opening of the lung capillaries, allowing more moisture to enter the lungs to thin the mucus, which can then be expelled more easily. RED CLOVER - Trifolium praetense.

Ruled by Mars. When growing, Red Clover, like other members of the pea family, pulls nitrogen out of the air and water and fixes it in the soil. In the body, Red Clover is used to pull out and eliminate nitrogen-based toxins. Both effects are related to its containing small amounts of Molybdenum. Molybdenum may also aid the body to produce hemoglobin more rapidly out of any iron ingested, and Molybdenum and iron can form specific antibodies to venomous bites. The other main area of use is in cancer patients, both internally and externally, and it has had particular success with prostate and breast cancer. It as an amazingly diverse spectrum of healing and tonic effects, and is considered one of the premier tonic herbs.
